This week's reading focused on project-based learning in enhancing cognition and mastery of various topics of instruction. The overall theme of supporting students and teachers as they incorporate PBL into curricula emphasized technology as an important leverage in this type of learning, but only if used in a manner promoting higher-level thinking and execution of topics of instruction. The idea of using technology to promote learning through artifact creation can be complicated and requires a comprehensive understanding of the functionality of the technology in question. Students must feel confident in their ability to operate the selected technology, and teachers must be trained and knowledgeable in the effective manner of incorporating technology into learning objectives and goals.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are key elements in learning, as stated by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills initiative. For problem-based learning to effectively lead to cognition and formulation of an understanding of the material presented, students must be equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving tools which in turn can be combined with technology to facilitate better comprehension and longevity of cognition.
Integrative learning as a learning theory blends the ideals of multiple theories of cognition and learning, combining them into one theory or instruction and learning. Integrating various disciplines such as English, science, and math into a curriculum, and incorporating technology into the process of learning essentially enhances cognition and associative memory, linking the different disciplines together, and facilitating holistic learning.
The use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in facilitating learning can enhance learning by introducing technology into instruction in a more autonomous way. Teachers can incite a personal relationship with learning in each student by showing them the ways in which technology can facilitate a more interactive and engaging experience. These factors help create an organic environment of learning whereby learners seek out knowledge which fits their needs and desires while still incorporating resources into the learning objectives of any topic of choice.
